***Special Review*** We Are Scientists -- Barbara (Album) PIAS / Masterswan

New York Indie rockers “We Are Scientists” return to the scene with
their fourth studio album, “Barbara”. Chris Cain and Keith Murray,
joined this time by Razorlight’s old drummer Andy Burrows, have taken
the band from it’s simple, “geek-rock” beginnings to indie legends with
this release, and it’s sure to wind up EMI and Virgin who let them go
after their last album, “Brain Thrust Mastery”, didn’t quite do as well
as hoped.

“We Are Scientists” seem to of matured with this album,
layering poetic lyrics over the top of the catchy riffs that made them
so popular in the first place. The greatest example of this (for me
anyway) has to be in track six, “Ambition”: “So long ambition / it’s not
a competition / I can win anymore”. This shows the band can take on a
more serious tone without losing their identity, which should finally
lay all the critics to rest.

The album doesn’t drop in pace once;
and you could even say that it gets better as it progresses! Starting
simply with lead single “Rules don’t stop”, the record seems to get more
confident as each song rolls into the next, ultimately resulting in the
triumphant closing track “Central AC”.

At only 30 odd minutes in
length however, some fans (me included) might find that there just
isn’t enough music to keep them happy. But this really is the only flaw I
can think of in the whole album! And, with the release of their
singles, we’re sure to be treated to some quality b-sides to keep us
satisfied!

Top track for me has to go to “Ambition”, I love it,
but songs coming in at a close second and third are “Nice Guys” and
“Pittsburgh”.

9/10

***Special Review*** We Have Band

Do the disco disco; band styley !

Linking disco to smooth indie and lyrical repeats. Disco never fails to re-invent itself. In the style of Pet shop boys’ phsycedelia while meeting hot chip’s lyrical sounds, ‘We Have Band’ can be compared to others in sound, the mixture of the psychedelic indie disco with the clearly sung London accents. WHB the album name, obviously an abbreviation of ‘We Have Band’; the cockney three piece have been intentionally clever when naming their band. So many bands now are trying way too hard to capture their fans with a band name that stands for about 20 different complicatedly ‘clever’ meanings. The tale of band never did run smooth... until now. Now we have band, that is. You came out’ and ‘Hero Knows’ are personal favourites of mine, whereas Buffet seems to be the track rising in popularity on the outside as WHB are continuing to deliver their echoing riffs and ballads around Europe.

‘Buffet’ is a smooth and powerfully beautiful track, maybe the most atmospheric song on the record making you feel like you’re drifting around in some kind of outer space spectrum. ‘You Came Out’ is the most catchy track on the record in my opinion; the quirky lyrics that open the track brilliantly, followed by the repetitive synth and the genuine whistling from the band, just screams future number one. ‘Hero Knows’ grasps an upbeat tempo as this track uses what sounds like cow bells mixed with jerkier synths and electric guitar sounds.

The perfect mix of both female and male vocalists in this band is one thing WHB have done to A* standard unlike other bands. Pure Pleasure for my ears, and yours. For us now, WE HAVE BAND. So that makes everything okay.
